Pendampingan Implementasi Gerakan Literasi Sekolah Berbasis Penguatan Karakter Gemar Membaca di Madrasah
Abstract
Reading literacy is a fundamental competency that supports educational quality improvement and the development of students' character. Although the School Literacy Movement (Gerakan Literasi Sekolah/GLS) has been implemented in many schools, its implementation still encounters several challenges, including limited integration of literacy into classroom instruction, low stakeholder participation, and the lack of sustainable literacy programs. This community service program aimed to strengthen the implementation of the School Literacy Movement through the development of students' reading habits at MAN 1 Sidoarjo using a Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach. The program involved 18 teachers, one librarian, and 36 students and was conducted through four stages: planning, action, observation, and reflection. The activities included needs assessment, literacy workshops, mentoring in developing literacy-based learning materials, classroom implementation of literacy activities, and continuous monitoring and evaluation. The results indicated that the average teacher competency score increased from 64.7 in the pretest to 87.9 in the posttest, representing a 35.9% improvement. All teachers (100%) successfully developed literacy-based learning materials, while 86.1% of students demonstrated improved reading habits based on questionnaire results. The program also produced 18 literacy-based lesson plans, a mentoring module, a GLS implementation guideline, and established a School Literacy Team to ensure program sustainability. The novelty of this community service program lies in the implementation of a Participatory Action Research-based mentoring model that integrates teacher empowerment, active stakeholder participation, and the strengthening of reading habits within a collaborative and sustainable framework. This model has the potential to serve as a best practice that can be replicated in other schools to strengthen literacy culture.
